Athlete Profile: David Wood

First and Last Name
David Wood

Where ya from originally?
Cedar City

How long have you been with CrossFit Las Vegas?
5 Months

What’s your favorite WOD?
Murph. Any WOD that takes me over an hour to complete is my favorite.

What’s your least favorite WOD?
Run a mile and a half with 5 burpees on the minute. That was one that was specially created, and it was terrible. If you’re not a quick runner, ie me, then the burpees become back to effing back. Yeah, I suck that bad. Now what?

What were you doing before CrossFit?  How did you hear about CrossFit and/or CrossFit Las Vegas?
Tying my shoes was a very exhausting work out for me. I was eating lots of food, drinking lots of beer, and smoking lots of cigarettes. I was a studly 275 lbs of sheer, lovable, jelly. Cuddling up to me was like being nuzzled by an elephant seal with a very handsome face. I did absolutely no physical activity.

Give us some insight as to your thoughts after your first workout at CrossFit Las Vegas.
I really liked the sense of community, but also the competitive nature of the workouts. It reminded me of when I was a kid in sports, except I was fat and out of shape. I was surprised that even though I didn’t look like anyone there, because they’re all studly-even the chicks, they rooted for me to push myself.

Tell us a little about then vs. now with regard to your performances on a couple of the benchmark WODs, ie Fran or Cindy.
Fight Gone Bad is the only one I can really compare, and it’s AWESOME! (Said in a high pitched singing voice.)
1st time I did it I wanted to punch myself in the face for starting such a strenuous sport. I got 188 reps on November 22, 2011.
2nd time I did it I still wanted to punch myeslf in the face, but not as hard. I got 254 reps on March 6th, 2012.
Everyone says that’s a huge accomplishment, and it really is one. Seriously. But I will break 300 next time…

Do you have any special or favorite CrossFit Las Vegas memories/moments?
My favorite memory was completing my first WOD fully prescribed.
Seeing my wife complete a series of handstand pushups, a month after she couldn’t even do a handstand was pretty great.
Watching my kids get excited about air squats. Who gets excited about air squats?
I’ve got so many great memories and they keep adding up. The Crossfit Open Games WOD. I got a lotta snatches in WOD 12.2…anyone anyone….no…anyone…

What advice would you give to a newbie or someone just joining CrossFit Las Vegas?
Drink the kool aid and and get ready to do some incredible stuff. Your life is about to change for the better. Trust me, unless you’re a puss and can’t commit.

And finally (and most importantly) Who is the best and most incredible coach at CrossFit Las Vegas?  Explain/defend your answer.
That’s a loaded question! They’re all awesome, Truly!
Joe, Great Jokes!
Mikey, No Rep!
Vili, Wonder Woman!
Marissa, Hurts my kids so I don’t have to!
Dezirae, Nice Job!
Tristan, Kill that Yoga WOD!
Broz, An 80lbs chick can lift that weight, why can’t you!
Tamara, Drink your fish oil!

Pretty sure I just peed myself reading that (which I know you can appreciate, Dave). You are awesome for so many reasons.. Wish I saw you and Gloria more at the gym.. But I guess I’ll settle for drunk karaoke and sweet serenades in Spanish outside of the gym. (=

OMGeeeee!!! LoL! All I could do during your profile was laugh….and like Gina, I think I peed a few times laughing. I’m trying figure out how an elephant seal with your face on it would look like?!? It has been great having you in the gym and I never leave the gym without a laugh when you’re in there. You have made huge improvements when it comes to working out at the gym as well as changes in lifestyle. I give you huge props and many of us look up to you and all you’ve done! Keep up the good work and maybe one day you would fill my socks….my wonder woman socks (but you’ll never look as cute as I do in them!!! LoL!)

Bwahahahah! David you are hilarious. You have made huge gains in crossfit and your lifestyle, in such a short amount of time. You are so strong and determined and have fun doing it. I love your energy. Keep up the great work.

Yay for an awesome CF Games team-mate. Pleasure judging you this year. Happy to push you any time. I remember the day you did that burpee run (while we were doing Murph as I recall). You guys looked miserable out in the driveway :( Looking forward to seeing you post those “before – after” pictures up on the bulletin board. We all need Super Hero Socks for our team photo!

    Best profile yet! haha

Awesome Profile Mr. Wood. I am glad to see that your writing does not lack any of your personality, and I am sure I can speak for a bunch of the people at CFLV when I say I enjoy working out with you on a daily basis. My favorite part about working out with you is not just that at any given time you can make people laugh, but when the workout starts, the Dave that changed his life comes out, and he works his ass off till the last rep, or last second hits. I feel that you have the best mix of both worlds, your sense of humor comes natural, but you are also one the most hard-working competitive people I know.

Ok now that I have said that, I would also like to say that I’m going to challenge Vili and Dave to a wonder woman sock off because I’m not sure who would be “more cute”. Secondly, Dave I saw all of those snatches you got in 12.2 and I’m sorry to have to tell you this but those weren’t even close to the best looking snatches in the building.

You guys are just lucky I did my snatches in Texas, cause they were really pretty.

Quite limber Dave! Tristan’s classes have come in handy. Question: What have elephant seals ever done to you?
Dave, it’s awesome the changes you’ve made and are still making. I can’t even imagine where you’ll be in a year. I am glad you’re part of the CFLV family, my neighbor, and a friend.
